We are proud to be sending you this Annual Report and update on Park Slope Geriatric Day Center’s developing programs. During the past year we have increased our services by adding a monthly Caregiver Support Group, another day of programming for The Lotus Club, a Memory Technology Center, new partnerships, and a renewed focus on providing evidence-based, comprehensive dementia care to families throughout Brooklyn.
Two years ago PSGDC’s board and administrative staff made the decision to shift from a heavy reliance on government funding to a more independent status. The economy and resulting decreases in grants have made the task more difficult, but thanks to all our supporters, PSDGC’s dedicated staff continues to provide essential services to individuals with memory loss and families struggling to cope with the devastation of Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia.
Along with growing our program, we have continued to remodel our facility at 14th Street. We have added new lighting to soften the atmosphere and new flooring that is safer and more attractive. By consolidating storage we were able to expand the program room and create a state-of-the-art Memory Technology Center. We have begun to offer one-on-one computer-based cognitive training, which can adjust skill levels based on the user’s abilities.
All of us at PSGDC believe there is life after diagnosis, and we see Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia as a treatable condition where we can profoundly improve the quality of life of both the individual and the caregiver. Our staff are all Qualified Dementia Care Professionals through the Dementia Care Professionals of America, a division of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA). We keep up with trends in the field and are beginning to see a developing focus on minimizing symptoms of the disease while seeking to maintain functional abilities for as long as possible.
In order to continue to develop these important services as an independent agency, the staff and board have closely monitored PSGDC’s finances and set clear goals. Through this transition period we incorporated funds from our cash reserves, but today a break-even goal with income from grants, fees, and donors is within reach. That’s why we need your support more than ever!
Please read through our Annual Report and call me if you have questions or would like to visit the Center. Your interest, ideas, and financial assistance are deeply appreciated.
Sincerely,
Christopher Nadeau
