Leeza’s Place Day
in Brooklyn, USA?

With the same warm and comforting environment as a close friend’s living room, Leeza’s Place at Park Slope Geriatric Day Center has become an oasis for families in the Brooklyn community. Guests are invited to drop in any time to unwind and regroup, and all programs are free of cost. Memory Preservation Scrapbooking Workshops, Caregiver support and education meetings, and stress management workshops are just a few of the programs currently offered.

One particularly unique program is Memory Television, a program which offers families an opportunity to document their stories on video with cherished photos and mementos in the backdrop. The media library is filled with valuable information related to memory disorders and has internet access available for online research.

The doors are open from 12 pm to 7 pm, Monday through Friday, to allow individuals who work during the day to take advantage of services in the evening hours. In addition, the program opens one Saturday a month allowing entire families to enjoy an uplifting day together in an environment that is supportive of those who are living with a memory disorder.

According to Borough President Marty Markowitz, November 4 is just that! On that date in 2005, with the support of the Borough President, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, NYC Department for the Aging Commissioner Edwin Mendez-Santiago, and Assistant Deputy Commissioner Janice Chu, Leeza’s Place at Park Slope Geriatric Day Center opened at PSGDC’s Prospect Park West Center.

This innovative new program has been established to provide an intimate and safe community-based setting where those affected by the diagnosis of a memory disorder can gather to prepare for the challenging journey ahead, and has been brought to Brooklyn through a partnership between Park Slope Geriatric Day Center and The Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation.

After having two generations of her family diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, noted television and radio personality Leeza Gibbons and her family created the nonprofit Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation to meet the growing needs of those impacted by memory disorders. Leeza’s Place, the primary program of The Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation, is a perfect compliment to existing PSGDC services, offering innovative programs and workshops designed to educate, empower and energize both family caregivers and those recently diagnosed with any memory disorder.
